This is called Old Cairo area. What it is is the old roman fortress of Babylon. In was buried over and Coptic church built on top of it. Today you can see the remains of the fortress and the Coptic church is a museum now (no cameras allowed-the actually made us check them) It was very cool inside and very well curated. Got book for further reading.
